What is Blogging?

StudioAdminWeb for Beginners

Blogging is a internet marketing tool that has proven to be an extremely useful way to reach a target market. For many who are just starting to market online,  “what is blogging?” is still a relevant question.

Blogging is a way to easily deliver current news, an online journal or other information to the world wide web.   The word Blog comes from combining the word “web” and “log”.   In simplest terms, a blog is an online journal.   A website owner with limited technical knowledge can start a blog by purchasing an affordable website hosting package, and installing free software like WordPress via an installation script.   Here is a great explanation of the basics of Wordpress

Ability to Add Your Own Content

You get a simple content management system when you use blogging software like WordPress.   With WordPress, you gain the ability to update your own website, add articles, pages, news updates, and photos without requiring the help of a web designer or programmer.    This functionality alone has sped up and simplified the process of adding content onto the internet.   Now website owners have direct access to their website content in a simple and easy to use format.  The power that website owners have at their finger tips has spawned a massive revolution in how search engines deliver results, and in how businesses or groups of all sizes deliver marketing, political or social messages.  This has been occurring since the late 1990’s.   And I’m only describing blogging here.   All of this has occurred prior to the current growth of web 2.0 and social media sites like Facebook, Flickr or Twitter.  But we’ll get to those in another article.

Get Listed in the Search Engines

The ease of content delivery that blogs and content management systems (CMS) give to website owners has been a factor in how Google  and other Search engines determine their search results.   Search engines are looking for good quality,  current content.    Google and other search engines are well aware that website users are more interested in finding relevant and up to date information rather than vising an old static website containing information that hasn’t changed in years.   If you update your website with current content, Google is more likely to take notice of you.  The ease of using blogs on websites is a perfect fit for many website owners.

Why does this work?  Why does Google Care?

To simplify:

People use the internet as a research tool, and Google is very good at delivering the search results that people are looking for.

Why?

Google sells ads that appear on the side and top of the search results.   If Google does a good job of delivering the most appropriate search results to their search users, then they are able to offer better value to their advertisers, and thus, stay in business.

This formula of advertising has proven to be wildly successful, and has changed the way much of the world communicates and advertises. The yellow pages, and print advertising have taken major hits to their ad customer base.   Newspapers ad, and classifieds sections used to be THE goto place for small affordable advertising of small businesses.   Niche Marketing  on the internet has changed this.

How does this help you?

Do you have a message that you want to broadcast to the world?  Perhaps you have a small business that you want to market.   You need customers.   The web has become one of the most effective ways to do this.   The old guard is dead!   Access to information is here, it’s searchable and it’s now!   If you have a small business, you need to add your local search listing, provide pre-sales information for prospective customers, and attract them through the search engines.  Once you’ve caught their attention, showcase your products and services and prompt them to contact you.
